LGC Net Zero is the follow-up event to LGC Climate Change, which took place virtually in 2020 and 2021. The 2022 iteration will also be online.

Whilst central government policy is important for guiding the overall direction of travel, when it comes to delivering real change, local government has a really important role. Only change on the ground will enable the UK to hit demanding targets for carbon reduction. Attendees will come from all types of councils, from rural districts to urban centres.

The primary aim of the event is to demonstrate workable strategies for adaptation and mitigation, with an emphasis on delivering results at scale and pace.

Based on extensive research with the target audience, we will be exploring a range of critical issues including:

  • Funding and finance
  • Planning policy and its central role in getting to net zero
  • Climate justice and what it means for local communities
  • Citizen engagement strategies
  • Accelerating the green recovery, driving the local sustainable economy, and investing in green jobs
  • Leveraging the power of procurement to drive behaviour change and foster growth
  • The game-changing development of local energy networks
  • Managing the transition to active transport

This event is designed for senior leaders, from Chief Executives, and Directors of Place, Economy, Finance, Transport, Transformation to name but a few. It will be an essential gathering for anyone involved in driving climate action and change at a local government level.

Over 300 local authorities have now declared a climate emergency, and around two thirds of councils have set targets to be carbon neutral by 2030. The role of councils in delivering the governments net zero ambitions by 2050 is absolutely critical.

How can you lead this at a local level?

We will look at what investment and support is required, and how to access funding successfully. What should you be focusing your efforts on? The event will include focused interactive discussions around biodiversity, flooding, EV charging infrastructure, for example, where we will really drill down into the detail and share best practice examples where results have been delivered at scale and pace.
